There has a lot been written and spoken about “paying it forward.” I think that the premise is awesome and I know many people use paying forward as way to engage in “random acts of kindness.” I know that I do! Random acts of kindness can literally be the difference between someone deciding to end it all and someone deciding not to end it all… I feel that paying it forward can transcend random acts of kindness…I know that paying it forward can have far reaching effects.
I was reading an article yesterday that snagged my attention. The irony is that I have actually heard and read similar stories several time. The gist of what was being said was; “if you are teaching someone to fish, you must give them a pole. If you are teaching someone to be self-sufficient and self-sustaining from the land, you must stop providing them with food.” The underpinning here is that you do them no favors by doing it for them. So give them the tools and allow them to hone their skills, so they can do for themselves and in turn show others how to do for themselves…and so it goes on.
I though how wonderful it would be to pay if forward with information; “priceless information” instead of a buying a cup of coffee for a stranger, or paying for someone’s dry cleaning, lunch, dinner, etc., give them information. Information that has proved transformative in your life and by sharing your story you might just empower someone to do for themselves. You might hand them a key that unlocks a door that presents them with endless possibilities to create the life that they want to live.
Think of all the profound experiences that you have had, the global knowledge, the wisdom and the insights that you have gained through the years. You have something that someone is in need of. You have knowledge that can transform someone’s life.
Now, I’m not talking about ramming this information down people throats or beating them over the head with it. I’m speaking about a gently sharing, of something that has worked for you or that you have knowledge of that you feel the need to share. Giving your wisdom and sharing your knowledge can help people to empower themselves and create the momentum sometime needed to move forward in life.
“Each one reach one; and each one teach one!” I first heard this phrase about 15 years ago from an on air radio personality, DJ Galaxy Glen. I remember thinking at the time what a profound statement and that this is a concept that has potential…I could literally envision it in my mind’s eye. Because if each one of us reaches someone and each one of us teaches someone, we can ALL help each other to grow and prosper in mind, body and spirit, we will enrich our lives and theirs. Thank you Glenn!
What wisdom large or small, old or new do you have within that may help one person or a million people?
I declare May 16 - 22 “Reach One Teach One” week.
The rules are simple:
I would be honored if you would share with me how your week went.
